Cody and Kristen Bass, along with their four young children, are one of the thousands of families affected by Hurricanes Laura and Delta. Back in August, a tree came crashing into their boys' bedroom during Hurricane Laura. When Hurricane Delta made landfall a few weeks after, the family home filled quickly with water. Due to the extensive damage left by both storms, the family's only option was to move in with a family member until finding a more temporary living situation.
Losing a home is painful, but seeing memories and cherished items damaged is unimaginable. Four months before the storms, Kristen's grandmother passed away and left her several sentimental items. Unfortunately, these cherished items were destroyed, as well as many other family heirlooms and personal belongings.
Alongside the grief, the Bass family is also concerned about the financial aspect of a home rebuild. "We are hemorrhaging money out. You can submit receipts for some stuff, but you can't submit them all. We have a mortgage and electricity bill that hasn't gone down. [We ask ourselves] 'why is it so much?' We aren't even staying here.".
Cody and Kristen have a long way to go before they are back into their home. Thankfully, with the help of volunteers and SWLA Responds, hope is not lost. Southwest Louisiana needs your help as they continue to navigate through the destruction and rebuild process. Join us and volunteer today to help families just like the Bass'.
